Good developments in battery ships

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) installations on board ships have increased in number and installed capacity as battery technology also develops. According to the Alternative Fuels Insight platform, there are more than 800 battery ships in use, a figure that has more than tripled in the past five years. Of these, 60% are active in Europe, and on-board batteries are used for propulsion, either purely electric or for hybrid functions. At least 50% are hybrid or plug-in hybrid, and about 13% are purely electric.

The current low energy density of available energy storage systems causes a preferred option for short trips or services that require little autonomy. For this reason, the shipping record shows that car and passenger ferries and ships intended for activities other than deep sea have the largest share of electric vessels.
